MY TIPS FOR USING COMMAND™ STRIPS AND HANGERS TO HANG WALL ART AND PICTURES

May 25, 2025

DEAR READER: This page contains links to products and resources that I’ve personally selected because I truly believe they are helpful, high-quality, or worth checking out. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. I may also participate in other affiliate programs and may earn a commission if you make a purchase through some of the other links—at no extra cost to you.

When it comes to hanging wall art without tools or damage, Command™ strips and hangers are my go-to solution. They eliminate the stress of drilling, the guesswork of finding a stud, and the risk of hitting wires or pipes hidden in the wall. And if you follow the instructions, they come off clean—no holes, no chipped paint, no regrets. Oh and some come in white or black. AND they really do WORK! I love them and keep a bunch on hand all the time.

I use Command™ strips and hangers so much that I thought I’d pass along some of my tips. Based on my experience, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

1. Stick With the Genuine Brand

Always use authentic Command™ products. They’re tested and reliable—I can’t vouch for off-brand alternatives, which may not hold as securely or remove as cleanly.

2. Choose the Right Type for Your Wall Art

Command™ offers a variety of products tailored to different wall art types. Be sure to select the one that fits both the hardware on the back of your piece and its weight. Here’s a quick guide:

Based on the hardware on the back of your art:

  • Sawtooth hanger(s) or wire → Use Command™ Universal Frame Hangers or Command™ Sawtooth Picture Hangers.
  • No hardware (just a flat back) → Use Command™ Picture Hanging Strips.
  • Canvas wall art on a wood frame → Use Command™ Canvas Hangers.

Based on the weight of the piece:

  • Always check the weight rating on the packaging.
  • Command™ strips come in sizes that hold from a few pounds up to 20 pounds.
  • I recommend keeping a  Command™ strip variety pack with 5-lb, 15-lb, and 20-lb strips on hand.
  • Tip: It’s better to use more strips than not enough. If in doubt, reinforce!

3. Keep It Level

Once you’ve positioned your piece, use a Command™ Adhesive Strip on the bottom edge of the frame to help keep it level and snug against the wall. This is especially helpful for lightweight frames that shift easily.

4. Follow the Instructions—Exactly!

This applies to both installation and removal. You don’t want something to break because it fell off the wall. And you don’t want wall damage when you remove the strip or hanger. So read all the instructions and follow them exactly.
